Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slot Review

Holmes and the Stolen Stones is a progressive jackpot slot from Yggdrasil Gaming with 5 reels and 20 paylines. This slot was originally released in September 2015 and the first such progressive jackpot Yggdrasil Gaming developed. You can play this game at online casinos such as PlayOjoMr Green or Guts.

Theme and basic information

There’s no secret to the theme in this slot: Sherlock Holmes is the protagonist and his faithful sidekick Dr Watson is with him, of course. They famous detecting pair is searching for the Stolen Stones, which are, in fact, diamonds and gemstones. You can find those all over the reels, if you’re lucky and they’re the key to triggering one of the jackpots. But more on that later.

The background sound gives us a sense of adventure, almost as if we’re on a hunt. And it’s great fun. The theme, as you would expect with a Sherlock Holmes slot, is on the darker side. We seem to be in London’s dark alleys, with one door to the left and one to the right.

Holmes and Watson are the two highest paying symbols on the reels, both characters are surprisingly burly men who are distinguishable but not very detailed in their appearance. Holmes pays 4,000 coins for a 5-of-a-kind win and Watson pays 2,000 coins for such a winning combination. There’s a leather-bound notebook and a magnifying glass on the reels as well. The four card suit symbols, whilst worth a lot less, are incredibly beautifully drawn and detailed.

You can play this slot from €0.20 to €40, which makes this a medium-range slot.

Collect shards in base game

Quite frankly, there’s not much happening in the base game. You spin away the reels for one aim and one aim alone: to trigger a bonus feature. What keeps things interesting are the different colour shards you’ll be collecting. Whichever reel a shard lands on, will add to the counter above the reel. They all come in different colours and once you have collected five shards of one colour, you will actually trigger the free spin bonus. The shards will form a diamond, which give you a slight edge towards winning an associated jackpot.

Beyond that, you will keep spinning the reels, hoping to stay up on your budget to keep going. Since this is a slot of low to medium volatility, you’ll get frequent enough wins that this won’t be a problem.

Two bonus features plus five different jackpots

You get two different bonus features in Holmes and the Stolen Stones. One will be activated by collecting three wooden keyhole scatters anywhere on the reels, the other by collecting at least three golden keyhole scatters.

  • Pick-me Bonus: You’re taken to the right-hand door and end up in a warehouse with 18 stacked crates. Click them as you like and collect coin wins and diamond shards. Pick the bomb and the feature ends. Once, when we simply clicked all the crates without caring too much, we ended up with over 60x our bet and five diamond shards before the bomb ended the feature. Another time we got one diamond shard and no coin wins at all, though.
  • Free Spins: Triggered when you either get 5 shards of one colour or at least three golden keyhole scatters. You’ll end up with 10 free spins and a 3x multiplier on each win.
  • Progressive Jackpots: There are five jackpots in the game, which can only be won during the free spins. You need to collect five diamonds of one colour to win the corresponding jackpot. The value of each jackpot is visible above each reel. By the way, this is a local jackpot only, meaning only players at the casino you’re playing at contribute to the jackpot.

Conclusion: A great game that will rarely disappoint

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Holmes and the Stolen Stones is 96.8%, which is excellent value and mostly truly feels like that. The bonus features are triggered frequently enough and have left us on average between 20 and 100x our stake in winnings, though less was possible as well. But we didn’t mind because it didn’t take long before the next feature was triggered. Even the Pick-me Bonus can easily give you 100x your stake, if you manage to pick the right crate before you pick the bomb.

Overall, this slot looks beautiful, has great and often hitting features and five progressive jackpots to boot. You can’t really go wrong with this slot unless you’re out of luck. In that case pick something else and come back later.
