Heroes’ Gathering Slot Review

Released in January 2020, this game can be played at online casinos such as Mr GreenRizk or LeoVegas.

Theme and general information

Fans of tabletop games and fantasy should feel right at home with Heroes’ Gathering from Relax Gaming. One might imagine that we in some sort of tavern, looking down at a table, where the game is spread out, surrounded by tankards, coins to bet with, and a few other things you might find in such a setting. There’s even a little mouse (let’s settle on that) that is hiding in one of those tankards.

The background music is light with a few string instruments that you might find in a medieval or fantasy tavern.

The view down on the reels is a little disorienting at first and the symbols, due to the skewed perspective and size, don’t look sophisticated or very good. Open up the paytable, though, and they jump out at you in wonderful detail. Shame that this doesn’t carry onto the actual reels.

We get a knight, a wizard and a goblin as the three high value symbols, worth 20x, 15x and 10x our stake for five of a kind, respectively. Then there’s a crest (the knight’s), a spell book (the wizard’s) and double knives (the goblin’s) as lower value symbols alongside three bronze coins (each associated with one of the characters) as well.

There’s also a wild and a bonus symbol in this game.

You can play this slot from 0.10 and 100.00 per spin.

The Mini and the Main Board Game

The base game is not very interesting at all. Add to that that it is quite volatile, you may find yourself spinning the reels just looking out for at least two of those bonus symbols, hoping they’ll land.

In that case, we’d trigger the Board Game main or mini. Now, the board game that surrounds the reels will become active. It’s a bit complicated to explain, if we’re being honest. We need to land two scatters on reels 1, 3 or 5 to trigger the mini and three scatters on those reels to trigger the main.

There are no set numbers of spins we will play. Instead, it depends on how the board game plays out. We have our little pawn in the top left-hand corner of the reels that will move along the spaces on the board whenever the wheel symbol lands on reel 3. It spins and we move between 1 and 6 positions just as if we rolled the dice. On those spaces, we see three amulets in gold, silver and bronze.

If our little pawn lands on one of those symbols, the corresponding symbols to the left side of the reels is filled with a pin. These amulets represent the three pots we could win. Coins are added as we get winning combinations corresponding with these amulets on the reels. Additionally, the four corners of the board adds a multiplier of 5x, 10x, 20x or even 100x our bet to those pots. If we land on one of them, all the collected pins thus far are removed, and we continue to move along the board and keep growing the pots.

If we manage to move around the board without collecting enough pins for any of the pots, all pins will be removed as well.

The feature (and free spins) continue until we have collected three pins for one of those pots, which will then be paid out along with any reel wins accumulated.

The Board Game mini is very similar to this, though we only play for one pot, depending on where our little pawn lands on after the first move. The corner multipliers only go up to 50x in the mini game, but otherwise the rules remain the same.

Whilst this may sound somewhat complicated, once you play the game, you’ll understand the concept much better.

Verdict: An interesting fantasy slot that doesn’t captivate for long

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Heroes’ Gathering is 96.45%, which is excellent. This is a highly volatile game, though, so wins aren’t exactly frequent. But the maximum potential payout is 29,794x our stake, which is once again excellent. We aren’t exactly sure how that may come about, however.

In theory, the two board game versions are interesting features and it’s nice to get an opportunity to play the game even if you only land two scatters. Indeed, landing three isn’t all that easy. But the novelty of it wears thin sooner rather than later and we end up with a slot that doesn’t hold up for very long, especially since the graphics are so oddly low-res, which means you won’t even be captivated by the visuals.

Sure, if you like tabletop games and fantasy adventures go and check Heroes’ Gathering out. But don’t expect to play it more than once or twice.
