Gonzo’s Quest Megaways Slot Review
Released in July 2020, this game can be played at online casinos such as PlayOjo, Casumo or ComeOn!.
Theme and general information
Gonzo’s Quest needs no introduction. It’s one of NetEnt’s most popular classics and the charming conquistador is back once again. This comes as no surprise after NetEnt acquired Red Tiger who happen to hold a Megaways license from Big Time Gaming.
Not long ago another classic, Piggy Riches, received the Megways upgrade and it was only a matter of time for another slot to follow. We would wager that there will be more in the future, after all, NetEnt does have an impressive portfolio of incredibly popular slots. We just don’t quite see it working with Starburst. But we shall see.
In any case, Gonzo’s Quest Megaways has received a visual upgrade to the original, coming with the usual Red Tiger UI rather than the classic NetEnt one. The game is pleasant to look at and Gonzo’s antics on the left-hand side can be quite entertaining.
We now play on 6 reels, however, and get at least 64 ways to win with a potential 117,649 ways when all reels have the maximum of 7 rows. There is not a big change to the symbols we get on the reels either. There are low value animal icons and higher value mask icons on the reels, all finely chiselled into stone. The new highest value symbol is worth 15x our stake for 6 of its kind.
We also get wild symbols and scatters in this one.
Bets can be placed from 0.10 to 4.00 per spin.
Cascading wins, climbing multipliers, Earthquakes and an Unbreakable Wild
One of Gonzo’s Quest classic features is the avalanche mechanic with its cascading wins. It’s uniquely suited to the Megaways mechanic and thus, we find it here as well.
As long as winning combinations form on the reels, the symbols that are part of that combination disappear and make room for new symbols from above. At the same time, the multiplier climbs from 1x to 2x, then 3x and finally 5x during the base game. When a cascade ends, the multiplier is reset to 1x.
Additionally, Earthquakes may occur randomly throughout the base game, which results in the removal of all low value symbols with only the high values remaining.
Finally, there is the wild symbol with the question mark on it. This is the Unbreakable Wild. That means it won’t vanish off the reels if it is part of a win. It will stick around for potentially more wins as new symbols come in from above. We can land a maximum of two at a time, one on the first three reels and one on the last three reels.
Free Spins with increased multipliers
The Free Fall symbol (which is golden) is the scatter in the game and we need at least three of them to trigger 9 free spins. Any additional Free Fall symbol would award an additional +3 spins. Now, the multipliers are increased, beginning at 3x, then 6x, 9x and all the way up to 15x.
It’s also possible to collect more Free Fall scatters and thus more free spins. If the free spins end with an active multiplier in place, it will be carried over into the base game and applied to the win that triggered the free spins in the first place.
Verdict: A fun reinvention of a classic slot with awesome potential
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is 96%, which is quite average, but more than the original had to offer. The game doesn’t have the highest volatility possible, though it’s volatile enough to get your adrenaline pumping.
And there’s a potential of 21,000x our stake, which is definitely awesome.
Gonzo’s Quest Megaways has been awaited anxiously by some for quite some time and the wait was certainly worth it. It’s fun, it’s looking great, the features all come together nicely, and the potential is an added bonus. There’s nothing we didn’t like about the game and if you’ve loved the original, you are going to love this one as well.
