Theme and general information

There are plenty of festive slots from Microgaming and Festive Indulgence is the latest in a long tradition of Christmas slots. Surprisingly, this one has even been developed by Microgaming itself. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t showcase in the slightest what they are capable of.

It’s pretty enough, mind you. But it could have been developed and released 10 years ago and wouldn’t seem overly modern. The jingles accompanying the whole setup are reminiscent of some Christmas songs without outright stealing the music.

We’re outside a house, looking through the window. The look is very traditional. There’s a Christmas turkey, a Christmas present, a chocolate cake, a female elf and Santa Claus. We also get the 9 to A playing card symbols that look like gingerbread.

Both, the female elf and Santa Claus, are worth 83.3x our stake for 5 of a kind. The wild, a Christmas wreath, pays out 1,111x our stake for 5 of a kind, which is pretty incredible. Also, Santa, the elf and the 9 all pay out when you get 2 on a payline.

It will be rather difficult to achieve such a win, however, since the slot has only 9 paylines, which seems also very old-fashioned. Microgaming is most famous for their vast range of slots with 243 ways to win. It’s a shame they didn’t use that engine for this slot as well.

The gift box is the scatter, by the way, which pays out a win as soon as you have two anywhere on the reels.

Get some free spins with a 3x multiplier

The base game doesn’t offer any special features at all. You’ll be looking out for the high-value symbols and the Wild as well as the scatter. Whenever you get two of each, a win is possible. But since we only get 9 paylines, wins are not exactly frequent.

When three or more scatters land on the reels, you get a coin win and 15 free spins are added. Five scatters would yield a win of over 450x our stake on top of those 15 spins.

During the free spins, you will get a 3x multiplier on all wins and it is possible to retrigger the free spins and get an additional 15 free spins. But that’s about it.

This is as traditional as it comes even in the game play and no features beyond that are hidden anywhere.

Conclusion: A festive slot that doesn’t have much to offer

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Festive Indulgence is 96.10%, which is decent. But this slot is very volatile and with so few paylines, wins are rare. But big wins are possible. Five wilds yield a great return and during the free spins with the 3x multiplier, we could get a maximum of 3,333x our stake for a win of 5 wild symbols.

But is that enough to play this game? Hardly. Most of the time, the free spins won us about 60x our stake and since we didn’t have to wait for them too long, we managed to keep our budget up enough to play a little longer. Which would be nice if this slot would be entertaining enough to want to keep playing.

And therein lies the problem. You are probably not going to want to stick around for too long. It’s a nice little slot for the festive season, but beyond that you won’t return to it.
