Double Dragons is a video slot from Yggdrasil Gaming with 5 reels and 25 paylines. This epic fantasy slot was originally released in September 2016. You’ll be able to play Double Dragons in online casinos such as PlayOjo, Shadowbet or Rizk.
With Double Dragons we get a fantasy slot from Yggdrasil Gaming. The reels are set in front of an indistinct landscape, which is dark and cold on one side and fiery and light on the other, reflecting the ice and the fire dragon this game features. The reels themselves are framed by ornamental decorations also showing us a blue and red dragon.
The symbols on the reel include four dragon eyes in different colours (purple, red, blue and green) and the card suit symbols (hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds) in matching colours. The purple eye is the most valuable and pays out 125 coins in a win of five of a kind. The red eye pays out 100 coins in such a winning combination and the blue and green ones pay out 90 and 80 coins, respectively.
The soundtrack of Double Dragons is particularly epic, giving us a sense of adventure and even a little doom and gloom. It sounds dangerous and inspires courage and caution in equal parts. After all, you are about to encounter dragons.
The theme is really cool and well done, especially when it comes to the special effects once the dragons make their appearance.
With Yggdrasil Gaming we either get slot that have one big feature and nothing much beside it, or even the base game is already packed with potential and possibilities. Such is the case in Double Dragons.
Here you get 25 set paylines (elsewhere you may read that the game has 20 paylines, which may have been the case in the past, but now it definitely has 25) and you can set the coin value between 0.01 and 5.00, giving you a betting range between €0.25 and €125.
The reels are cascading, meaning you get the avalanche feature on every spin with a winning combination. All symbols that are part of a winning combination will explode and make room for more symbols to fall in from above. If you manage to do that four times in a row, you will trigger the Double Dragons feature. More on that below.
In the base game, you should also pay attention to the Dragon Heads that will show up randomly. They are attached to a Wild and each have a different feature as well. More importantly, however, they are collected on the right-hand side. Get 9 blue Dragon Heads and you’ll trigger the Ice Dragon free spins. Once you have collected 9 red Dragon Heads, you will activate the Fire Dragon free spins.
As you can see, even in the base game there’s plenty going on. More details about the features will be explained in the next paragraph.
There are three features to look out for in Double Dragons. Two of them are part of the base game and then there are two Free Spin features as well, essentially giving you four bonus features.
Finally, there are the free spins. Once you collected 9 Dragon Heads of one colour, the corresponding free spins are triggered. Unfortunately, you will only receive 5 free spins at a slightly reduced coin rate. We’re not sure why that is, but it puts a bit of a dampener on the fun, especially since you somehow expect 9 spins to be activated. Anyway, the good news is, you only need two consecutive wins to release the Dragons and you’ll get two stacks of wild reels left behind by either the Ice Dragon or the Fire Dragon, depending on which mode you play in. With only five spins, however, you’ll probably only see them once.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Double Dragons is 96%. That’s an average value for online slots and here you will definitely feel the volatility of the game. In older reviews, you’re likely to read that the game has 20 paylines and that you get 9 free spins. Perhaps the game has received some sort of upgrade, but it will play out as described above. So, prepare yourself otherwise disappointment waits.
It took us nearly 350 spins to trigger the free spins for the first time. And whilst we only needed two more Dragon Heads of the other colour to trigger them a second time, we first collected four more Dragon Heads of the once we had already played before eventually triggering the free spins again. In other words, it takes a while.
And the Double Dragons feature doesn’t trigger every other spin either. Perhaps once every 50 spins, if you’re lucky. So, as epic and beautiful and fun as this game can be, careful budgeting is in order if you want to get anywhere with it.
