Theme and general information

If the developers at Play’n GO have a favourite theme, it is undoubtedly Ancient Egypt. They seem to release a new slot with this theme every month lately. Whilst we have had to complain that they sometimes only recycle the graphics, symbols and gameplay, cloning their own slots, they have been a bit more innovative with Dawn of Egypt.

Officially, this is supposed to be the sequel to Legacy of Egypt, but you’d hardly guess it.

Visually, Play’n GO once more presents a stunning slot. Much more so than the latest among their Egyptian themed slots. We’re inside a magnificent temple or even a palace with polished floors, gigantic Horus statues and beautiful symbols on the reels. Even the low pay playing card symbols have been crafted with a lot of attention to detail, which is lovely.

Higher value lotus flower and ankh, which each pay 10x our stake for 5 on a payline, are also beautiful as emblems. Scorpion and snake medallions, worth 20x our stake each for a win with 5 of them, are great if unusual in Egyptian iconography. Bastet and Horus are the gods on display, worth 40x and 100x our stake, respectively. They are drawn in great detail, coming to life on the reals.

The exotic soundtrack does what’s necessary to create an enticing atmosphere. It all comes very well together and among the latest Egyptian slot releases from Play’n GO, this is easily a favourite.

The wild is the scarab, which also comes to life when it is part of a win. It’s worth 100x our stake for five of its kind as well.

Two-tiered free spins

As is so often the case, it’s all about the free spins in this Play’n GO online slot. Thanks to those scarab wilds, the base game never feels boring, mind you. They flutter their wings as they become part of a win, which is nice to look at and makes us feels as if something is happening.

But we are waiting for those blue pyramids to land and launch the Wheel of the Gods, which gives us between 3 and 10 or even 15 or 20 free spins. The chance for any number of spins is equal, which is at least fair. For three scatters, we also get a 5x win, whereas four scatters would give us a win of 20x our stake and five scatters would give us a staggering 1,000x our stake.

During the free spins, you’ll see a row of random symbols (changing each spin) that will be upgraded to a randomly selected symbol (of a higher value, of course) during that spin.

The blue pyramid now becomes a red wild/scatter, which will launch the second tier of free spins: the Pyramid Spins. Verdict: Gorgeous Egyptian slot from Play’n GO that is a little more innovative than usual

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Dawn of Egypt is a solid 96.23%, which is good value, especially since this is not the most volatile among Play’n GO’s video slots. The game is still very volatile, mind you, but wins are not as elusive as in other slots we’ve seen from them.

Among their line-up of Egyptian themed slots, Dawn of Egypt is a less generic than some others. The developers at Play’n GO put more thought into this, which we appreciate. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay engaging enough that we keep spinning the reels to trigger those free spins.

Of course, sometimes you may only get three free spins and they may end up winning you nothing at all. But seven or eight free spins give you enough opportunity to trigger the Pyramid Spins as well and then things can get interesting.

With those symbol upgrades in place, the standard wild and the wild/scatter symbol that keeps adding free spins to your counter as long as you get at least two of them on the reels, you can play quite a few spins and end up with handsome wins.
