When you first read the title of the game, you may just realise that Cygnus is the name of a star. Or perhaps a galaxy, if you’re not sure. But then you open up the game and find yourself back in ancient Egypt. The Northern Cross is highlighted in the background and Cygnus happens to be one of the stars in that constellation.
A massive pyramid rules the background. The stars are bright in the sky and palm trees are outlined against the night. The reels are framed by two glowing and decidedly alien-looking obelisks. That leaves us with the question, whether aliens did indeed build the pyramids and if they, perhaps, hailed from Cygnus. The slot seems to suggest as much.
In any case, the game is beautifully designed, and we love the look of it. The soundtrack is suitably exotic and quite easy to listen to as well. It enhances the theme magnificently.
The reel symbols are all round and mostly inspired by Egyptian imagery. There’s a high value 7, which pays 30x our stake for 6 on a payline. The cat pays 3x our stake for such a win, the camel 2x and the ibis pays 0.8x our stake for 6 of its kind. There are three gems as well, corresponding in colour to the higher value symbols.
The W is the wild and the X is a multiplier symbol. A somewhat alien looking emblem is the scatter in this game.
You can play this slot from 0.20 to 100.00 per spin.
This game comes with avalanche (or cascading) wins. All symbols that form winning combinations will disappear and make room for more symbols from above. At the same time, the rows expand by one with every consecutive win. The maximum number of rows you can get is 8, which then increases the number of paylines to 262,144.
Cygnus uses a new feature where symbols (in this case called marbles) are pulled down by gravity, if other symbols below them were removed. They are moved forward on the reels, if there is an incline towards reels 1,2 and 3. Essentially, they tumble down with the avalanche wins, meaning that symbols originally on reels 4, 5 or 6 move towards the front reels.
The X multiplier symbol also lands randomly on the reels and with each appearance, the multiplier doubles. It begins at 2x and can double up to 64x as long as you have 6x the X on the reels.
The free spins are called free drops here, which is not uncommon with this type of game from ELK Studios. They are triggered in a pretty unusual way. The Cygnus scatter, that alien emblem, will land anywhere on the reels, often on reel 5 or 6. Avalanching wins and the gravity force can propel the symbol towards reel 1.
When it lands on reel 1, it will basically charge the left-hand obelisk and thereby trigger the free drops. We get 7 of them, playing out on 8 reels with all 262,144 paylines.
Furthermore, the X multipliers are now kept on every new spin, landing at the bottom of the reels. The multiplier we are at, will also be kept, of course.
It is possible to retrigger the free drops, if another Cygnus scatter reaches the left obelisk.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) is 96.10%, which is fairly average. The slot is also quite volatile, which means, careful budgeting is in order. Thanks to those cascading wins and expanding rows, however, winning doesn’t feel very hard. It’s just that the wins aren’t usually very big.
Cygnus would have been a pretty good fit in the Gold series with adventurer Kane. And, indeed, we did expect to see him in Egypt sooner rather than later. Well, whilst Cygnus gives us an Egyptian theme with alien elements and there is definitely a resemblance to the Gold slots, this game stands well on its own.
What surprised us the most is how playable Cygnus is. It looks and sounds perhaps a little more complicated than it is. The features work really well together, and the mechanics are effective. This slot is a lot of fun and will keep you playing for a long time.
Plus, the win potential is definitely there. Whilst the maximum win can be 5,000x our stake or €500,000, we saw some awesome wins in the free drops with nearly 200x our stake one time. And it’s a great-looking slot as well. So, go ahead and check it out when you get the chance.
