Yggdrasil Gaming usually manages to come up with unique themes. Sure, they’ve also gone mainstream here and there, but they do like to try something new. Enter: Chibeasties and their magical real. These adorable and whimsical little creatures remind us of cute little trolls in a tribal getup. We imagine ourselves on some tropical island, where they live their magical little lives
So, we get a colourful and cute little slot with no playing card symbols in sight. The low-value symbols are made up of various plants. And the beasties themselves are the high-value symbols. The horned brown one is worth 750 coins in a combination of 5 on a winning line. The medicine man is worth 400 coins and the little female is worth 300 coins. The orange one is still worth 200 coins for such a winning combination.
Once again, we get an Yggdrasil Gaming slot that offers one valuable feature but nothing much is happening in the base game. You get 20 set paylines and can set your bet between €0.20 and €40, offering a fairly decent range to play with.
Hitting auto-play, you’ll set a good speed for the slots and watch as the reels spin away, offering small and frequent wins, whilst you’re waiting for the free spins feature. One good thing about the base game is that wilds appear plentiful on the reels.
The main feature to look forward to is are the free spins. Three scatters will give you 10 free spins. Four scatters will get you 20 free spins. And if you get five scatters, you can look forward to 40 free spins.
Before the feature begins, you’ll be looking at a sort of magical circle, where all symbols in the games surround a magical stone. A light is cast around and eventually settles on one of the figures or plants. This means, the chosen character or plant will become an expanding symbol during the free spins. Whenever that selected symbol shows up during the free spins, it will expand after any potential wins have been paid out. Once it has expanded, wins are paid out again, especially newly created wins but all previous wins will be paid out once again as well.
Often you will have one or two symbols on each spin that will end up expanding, but once we did have the chosen Chibeasties expand on all five reels, which gave us 200x our bet in winnings. That’s pretty cool.
By the way, the wild can also become the symbol that expands during the free spins.
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Chibeasties is 96.2%. That’s a good though not a great value. We have seen better, and Yggdrasil Gaming can do better. But since Chibeasties is not overly volatile, wins tend to be frequent enough that you can play 300 rounds without stretching your budget too much. And it may well have to stretch that far, because it took us nearly 350 spins before we triggered the free spins for the first time.
It took us less than 50 spins to trigger them for the second time, but obviously that’s not something you can count on. Be prepared to wait for a while instead. But the free spins tend to be worth it, so a little careful budgeting will take you a long way.
Chibeasties is neither the best, most exciting or greatest of slots in Yggdrasil’s portfolio. But it is a lovely little game that can provide some entertainment for a while and it’s definitely worth a try.
