Theme and general information

Vampire slots are never out of fashion. Only a short while ago, we reviewed Wild Blood II from Play’n GO for you. Now, ELK Studios has released their own Vampire offering, Blood Lust. Instead of going dark and creepy, they’ve gone smouldering and attractive. Though, there’s still some creepy about that and, as we know, most vampires prefer the dark of night.

Thus, we get a setting at night with a nearly full moon in the distance and an old castle that’s a must-have. The background offers some neat details and the soundtrack sets the tone for this slot.

On the reels, we get low value card suit symbols that glow, and four vampires who are mostly trying to seduce us with their eyes. There’s the one with the green hair, a blue-haired beauty, a red-head and the one with the golden frame, who is apparently Dracula himself, though reminds us more of Edward Cullen. He’s worth the most with 4x our stake for 5 of a kind. The others only pay between 0.8x and 1.6x our stake for such a win.

We also get a wild symbol, a re-spin symbol (showing candles) and a bonus symbol.

Boosted Stacks and Boosted Re-Spins

ELK Studios advertises boosted stacks in this slot, though that’s difficult to consider a proper feature. In theory, all symbols can land stacked across any of the reels. That happens completely randomly and on adjacent reels, different stacks of symbols can land. There’s no indication that a bonus stack is triggered or some such. You’ll just notice a stack of symbols instead of individual tiles.

On reel 5 we get the Re-Spin symbol. It only lands there and when it does, symbols currently on the reels (only one type and almost always those that are already stacked at least once) are held in place and we get a re-spin, which is supposed to add further matching symbols, wilds or more bonus symbols (as any bonus symbols already on the reels will be held as well). It’s possible to get another re-spin, if another Re-Spin symbol lands on the reels.

And that’s about it for the base game. Some decent wins may occur if you get those boosted stacks during a re-spin.

The potential for almost unlimited free spins

We need three bonus scatters anywhere on the reels to trigger the free spins. How many free spins we get, depends on where the scatters land. They form a rectangular zone and any symbols within that zone provide +1 free spin. The minimum number we can get is 4 and the maximum 15.

During the free spins, the three lower-value vampires appear above the reels with metres below them. Anytime matching vampires land on the reels, they’re added to the corresponding metre. When a metre for one of the vampires is full, they are transformed into the Dracula symbol for the remainder of the free spins. We also get +1 free spin.

Also, since bonus symbols continue to land during the free spins as well, we can potentially keep getting free spins, which have no limit attached.

Verdict: A vampire slot that is somewhat anaemic

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Blood Lust is a solid 96%, which is also very average. The slot sits on the higher side volatility-wise, but it’s not the most dangerous one out there. Disappointingly, the maximum win has been capped at 2,500x our stake, which is still €/£/$ 250,000, mind you.

The thing with Blood Lust is this, if you make a vampire slot, can you at least try to be a little original? Put this one up beside Wild Blood, Wild Blood II or even Immortal Romance and you won’t see much of a difference.

Blood Lust is a good-looking slot that has been executed well enough, technically speaking. And the features are alright. It’s just that none of it feels particularly exciting or even interesting. Blood Lust is rather without much blood running through its veins.
