Theme and general information

At first glance, Big Bounty Bill looks like a Wild West slot. But when you look closer, you will find that we’re not exactly in the Wild West and that there are some futuristic elements to the slot. In fact, it looks rather like Wild West in Space, which is certainly unique. Of course, if you think back to the cult TV show Firefly that graced our screens once upon a time, space and the Wild West have been combined before.

Big Bounty Bill somewhat reminds us of that. The slot looks pretty cool. Two moons are visible in the sky beyond, electric elements grace the Wild West buildings and the structure framing the reels definitively has an alien or science fiction feel.

On the reels, we get some generic playing card symbols. There are also a mechanical horse and bull among the symbols. And we get three villains: a woman, a guy with a gun and a guy with a cigar. He is the highest value symbol worth 3.3x our stake.

A futuristic-looking gun is a special expansion symbol that shoots away at the blocked symbols above the regular 5×4 reel set. The bonus symbol is the menacing-looking shadow of a guy, presumably the sheriff. There’s a gold wild symbol that make rare appearances.

Expansion symbols and hyper spins

In the base game, you will notice that the usual grid is 5×4 symbols big. There are also three rows of locked symbols above it. Whenever the gun (the expansion symbol) appears on the reels, it shoots at the symbols above. The bottom row needs one shot to be unlocked, the next row needs two shots and the final row needs four shots to be unlocked.

However, in the base game, the unlocked symbols are only really coming into play during the Hyper Spins re-spins. When three or more gun symbols appear on the reels, we get 3, 5 or 7 Hyper Spins. Now all previously unlocked symbols will come into play and we get up to 16,807 ways to win.

More symbols can be unlocked during the Hyper Spins when more expansion symbols land and shoot at the remaining locked symbols. Another Hyper Spin is awarded when that happens.

It is also possible to buy the Hyper Spins. For 8, 15, 20 or 25 of them you pay 45x, 107x, 164x or 229x your stake.

Expanded reels in the free spins

The Free Spins are unlocked when three bonus symbols land on the reels. Now the scene changes to night and we get 8 free spins.

Free spins play out very much like the Hyper Spins. Any unlocked symbols carry over from the base game and it’s possible to unlock further blocked symbols with the expansion symbol. Each time, a new free spin is added.

And that’s about all there is to it.

Verdict: A cool-looking slot that is somehow disappointing

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Big Bounty Bill is 97.33% in the base game and 97.98% in the free spins. Either way, the RTP is absolutely excellent. However, this is a highly volatile slot and the payouts are relatively low on the whole. The hit rate isn’t too bad, but somehow all those paylines rarely make an impact and big wins don’t really seem to be a thing.

The theme is cool, and the slot looks great. But the gameplay doesn’t captivate for long. Whilst it is potentially possible to 5,000x our stake, the potential never really eventuates. You just don’t see the wins this game is apparently capable of. And the gameplay is becoming repetitive.

Big Bounty Bill is interesting for a little while, but it is ultimately disappointing.
