Theme and basic information

You remember the battleship game from Hasbro? You and an opponent each slot your battleships in a grid and try to guess your opponent’s position. If you hit the ship and sink it, you win. This video slot is sort of taking that premise and turns it into a slot game.

Visually, the slot looks great. At least, the scene looks really good. You’re on the bridge of a battleship, looking at the controls, which include the spin button in the middle. Turrets are visible in the back that aim right and left as well. On the screen in front of you, you see the reels, various symbols that look like insignia and the card royals from 10 to A.

On the left, you see the ships you need to ‘sink’ with the rocket scatter that shoots the ships that appear above the regular reels. Usually, two types of ships will be visible here, showing you the number of spins that you can get when you sink one.

On the right, you see available set jackpots that you can win during the free spins.

The highest value symbol, which looks like the prow of a battleship, is worth 4x your stake for a 6-of-a-kind win. The other high-value symbols are worth between 1x and 2.5x your stake for such a winning combination. As you can see, the wins are miniscule even for 6 of a kind.

Sink the battleships in the base game

The main attraction in the base game are the cascading wins. Whilst you do get a maximum of 117,649 ways to win, you will hardly ever see that number more than a few thousand wins and even then, you won’t get more than four or five wins during one spin.

The cascading wins make things a little more interesting as symbols from those winning combinations disappear off the reels and make room for more symbols and hopefully more winning combinations from above.

Additionally, the turrets my randomly fire on the reels, destroying symbols, once more making room for more symbols from above and hopefully creating wins. Here, low-paying symbols will actually be destroyed and replaced with high-value symbols.

When missiles land anywhere on the reels, they will shoot at the ships above the reels, hopefully hitting enough of those to sink them. That will rarely happen, however.

Should you manage to sink a battleship in one spin, you will receive between 5 and 50 free spins. Naturally, you will more regularly trigger 5 free spins rather than 50 (or even 10 for that matter).

During the free spins, the target ships above the reels can also be destroyed by scatter missiles landing on the reels. Now, however, you will either be able to trigger a jackpot or 5 additional free spins. There are 4 jackpots in total, giving you either 20x, 100x, 500x or 2,500x your stake in winnings.

By the way, wild symbols only appear on reels 2 to 5 during the free spins. Here, they can help creating winning combinations, adding to the cascading wins and making those a little more successful.

Conclusion: Megaways with mini pays – Not quite enough

The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Battleship Direct Hit is 95.9%, which is below average. And honestly, the return to player can hardly be surprising given the small wins you can get here. There may be over 100,000 ways to win, but most 6-of-a-kind wins will hardly return your stake. And mostly, you will not even get more than three or four of a kind wins.

Battleship Direct Hit is visually great. It’s unusual and immersive, even if the symbols on the reels are a little unimaginative. But the scene is cool enough. Beyond that, the slot will not keep you interested for very long, simply because the wins are so small. That’s very disappointing in the long run and obviously not very lucrative. You’ll soon be moving onto other slots, even other megaways slots.
