Cryptologic is a major online casino software developer that was originally founded in a basement in Toronto by two brothers in 1995. As a major player they have been around since the beginning of online casinos and they’ve seen their share of ups and downs.
Anthony and Mark Rivkin did indeed found Cryptologic in the basement of their parent’s house in Toronto in 1995. It wasn’t even intended to be an online software developer at the time, because the Rivkin brother’s originally invented a data encryption system and simply searched for a good way to apply it. They had been looking into testing their system for financial online transactions and instead they ended up founding one of the very first online casinos.
That was InterCasino in 1996. Back then Cryptologic was still called WagerLogic, however, which can still be found here and there in association with the company.
After they were initially headquartered in Toronto, the company eventually moved to Dublin in Ireland. Since 2000 they were listed on the NASDAQ and two years later they were also trading at the London Stock Exchange.
Cryptologic became one of the biggest software solution providers in the industry in the mid-2000’s and enjoyed quite the success until the late 2000’s. Among their clients they count BetFair, William Hill, Sky, Paddy Power and the Littlewoods Gaming Group.
Especially their deal with Marvel to develop a suite of slots based on the popular comics, resulted in quite a coup for Cryptologic. They made more than 20 slots, many of which linked with progressive jackpots. Whilst their slots were not quite as well-done as Playtech’s Marvel offering, they were well-loved.
Mismanagement and a few leaner years, however, resulted in a slump for Cryptologic and it was in 2012 that they were bought by Amaya. It didn’t help that Disney bought Marvel and withdrew the license for the slot games as well. But nowadays Cryptologic remains a staple of the online gambling industry, having shifted their focus on the development of in-browser playable slots almost entirely.
Cryptologic’s game portfolio is rather extensive. Whilst they, too, focus mostly on slot games, you can find quite a range of other games in their portfolio as well. Most of those are still available at InterCasino and other online casinos that Cryptologic works with. There portfolio consists of well over 200 games at the moment.
One of Cryptologic’s specialties are licensed slots. For many years their Marvel suite was incredibly popular. But nowdays those games are no longer around for the simple fact that Disney withdrew the license.
You can still play a fair number of popular licensed titles from Cryptologic, of course. Among them are Street Fighter 2, Call of Duty 4, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Forrest Gump or Braveheart.
Cryptologic’s slots may not have the finesse of some of their competitors, but they are solid games and enjoyed by many. It should be mentioned, however, that some of their slots are somewhat outdated and that many of their games have an RTP that is slightly below industry average. Many of their slots have an RTP of just under 95%, which could certainly be improved.
Cryptologic offers a range of table games to their players as well. Indeed, you can find just about anything you might wish for: roulette, blackjack, baccarat, casino poker games such as pai gow, red dog, texas hold’em or casino war. Sic Bo and Craps are also available from Cryptologic.
The range of games here is pretty substantial and varied.
Video Poker and other games
Of course Cryptologic also offers video poker games and quite a few of those as well. You can easily find a dozen video poker games from the developer.
Additionally a few other games are also made by Cryptologic. Here you may find scratch cards, rummy and even solitaire. There’s definitely a lot of variety in their portfolio.
The developer has made quite a few progressive jackpots in their time. Many of them came with smaller jackpots, where players could hope to win a few thousand or perhaps ten thousand. The Marvel slots were almost all linked with progressive jackpots, but since those games no longer exist, we can no longer count them here.
You can still find the Millionaires Club jackpots, however, which tend to be the biggest jackpots Cryptologic offers and often pay out more than a million. There’s also the well-known Rags to Riches progressive jackpot, which manage to pay out handsomely as well.
The Frightmare slots also come with progressive jackpots.
Cryptologic was certainly not at the forefront of mobile gambling. Since they began to focus on instant in-browser play, the quality of their games has markedly improved, but they were slower on the uptake when it came to adapting the games for mobile play as well.
As a consequence Cryptologic is still somewhat behind the competition, but they’re catching up, ensuring that their games are available for mobile play as well. InterCasino in particular offers a pretty good mobile app for iOS and Android devices and players want to be able to use it to its full potential, which includes enjoying all of Cryptologic’s games as well. Many of their popular titles are now available for mobile play, though older titles may still be unavailable for some time.
Safety and security
Cryptologic has been licensed for online gambling since 1996. That in itself should tell anyone worried about safety and security just how reliable this company is.
The company has worked with TST and eCOGRA to ensure their games are tested for fairness and randomness and their software is considered to be among the most reliable in the industry. They also make sure to handpick their partner’s, only working with the most reputable online casinos. Thus player disputes involving Cryptologic games are almost unheard of.
InterCasino, still the main casino operating with their software, is licensed through the MGA and the UKGC, both highly respected online gambling jurisdictions.
Cryptologic is not as big any more as they used to be. But they have been around for such a long time that the industry would feel the loss without the company. We do hear about news every once in a while, more often in connection with InterCasino, however.
Simply check out our news section to find out what’s new with the developer. We’ll be sure to update as often as possible or relevant.
Cryptologic Online Casinos
We’ve mentioned InterCasino a few times now, and it is by far the longest-running Cryptologic casino around. But it’s not the only place where you can find Cryptologic games, of course.
Indeed, the company’s software is still quite popular, especially for their high quality table games and their more popular slots. Here you’ll find all our reviewed online casinos that also Cryptologic games.
Keep in mind that the list is not complete, since we have not reviewed all existing casinos that offer Cryptologic games.
